Manage a project using software management tools

Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency ICTPRG502 - Manage a project using software management tools
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use software management tools, to manage a project from initiation to completion. It applies to individuals who work in a team, or who individually develop systems to specification, using software management tools to manage delivery within time and budget parameters. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the programming and software development industry, and include access to:

the internet

project management software

source-control software

specific tools and licences, depending on the particular platform.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

ELEMENT

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Select the software management tools

1.1 Determine the software development methodology to be used

1.2 Determine the project management software to be used

1.3 Determine the source-control system to manage the source code and to handle conflicts

1.4 Determine the collaboration software to be used

2. Use the software management tools

2.1 Create a project plan, according to the software requirement specifications

2.2 Define the source-control procedures

2.3 Create a collaboration environment

3. Monitor the use of software management tools

3.1 Monitor, and adjust, the project plan to maintain progress according to the project plan

3.2 Ensure that the code is correctly entered into the source-control system

3.3 Monitor the collaboration environment, and resolve issues where required

Evidence of the ability to:

use software management tools to manage the development of a system to specification

select the software development methodology, project management software, source-control system, and collaboration software

create, monitor and adjust a project plan, according to the requirement specifications

define source-control procedures, and ensure the correct entries into the system

create, monitor, and resolve issues in a collaborative environment.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

outline the basic principles of project management

describe the key features of the software development life cycle (SDLC)

describe the importance of software specifications

identify the methods and importance of version control.

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

2.2 Define the source-control procedures

2.3 Create a collaboration environment

3. Monitor the use of software management tools

3.1 Monitor, and adjust, the project plan to maintain progress according to the project plan

3.2 Ensure that the code is correctly entered into the source-control system

3.3 Monitor the collaboration environment, and resolve issues where required

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
